How to carve a totally awesome Halloween bunny pumpkin lantern

You will need

  • Medium to large pumpkin
  • Serrated kitchen knife
  • A large spoon or ice cream scoop
  • Pen
  • Printer (Optional)
  • Some masking tape

    Step 1
    Cut a circle in the top of the pumpkin to form a lid. If you do this at an angle this will help stop it falling in.

    Scoop out the soft contents, leaving the wall of the pumpkin. An ice cream scoop works really well for this.

    Download the templates in the link at the top of the page and print them out. If you don’t have a printer you can always drawing them out yourself on a piece of paper.

    Attach the template to the pumpkin using tape.

    Use a pen to make a dotted lines along all the lines on the template. Make sure you pierces the paper each time so that you’re left with dotted lines on the pumpkin that will act as a guide. Remember to keep the template to refer to when you’re carving.

    Take a serrated kitchen knife and start by making rough cuts you get the big pieces of pumpkin out first, you can go back and clean up the edges of your design later. Also it can help to hold the pumpkin in your lap as it’s easier when the face is gazing up at you.

Top tips to make you pumpkin last longer

Try spreading petroleum jelly on the cut edges as this will help to seal in moisture.

If your pumpkin still shrivels a few days later, it can be revived by soaking in cold water for up to eight hours.

Another great tip is to make a chinmy. Simply look to see where the lid has blackened and cut a small hole there to let the heat out.
